Therefore, it is important that a return preparer and other tax professionals understand how and when to respond to the IRS, whether in a civil examination or a criminal investigation. This material will discuss what to expect from an IRS examination and the options for resolving or disputing an IRS examination by working with the IRS Appeals Division or litigating a tax case in U.S. Tax Court or in refund litigation. We will also discuss how to make a voluntary disclosure to the IRS and the basics of an IRS criminal investigation.
